Six Great Things About Being a Student
Everybody knows the being a university student clichés; constantly being broke, the boring lectures, final exams and making the library your second home. But being a student has some pretty cool perks too! So if you have enrolled in your frist year or are already enjoying uni life, here are somethings about being a uni student that makes it all worthwhile.
Being a Part of a Community
For me, the best part about being a student was the sense of community I felt with my fellow peers. Uni students tend to band together and protect their own, especially when it comes to friendly rivalry between other universities! At the end of the day, we’re all in the same boat and we’re a pretty friendly bunch. So, there will be always someone to strike up a conversation with and make new friends.
It’s no secret that uni students know how to let loose. The campus parties really make up for the all-nighters and early morning lectures you’re forced to endure! The great part about uni parties is the cheap booze, good music and even better company. And you don’t have to wait until the weekend either, uni students party on all days of the week! Some of the best memories of my university experience was the themed events that took place on campus, what wasn’t so fun was the wicked hangover after, but it’s all a part of the experience!
The Free Stuff at O-week
O-week can be daunting for newbies and an adult playground for others. In addition to finding all the extra-curricular activities you can do while at uni, you’ll literally be handed truckloads of free stuff! Sounds too good to be true, right? From coffees, discounted gym memberships, bookmarks, water bottles and other random junk you’ll probably never use… Everyone wants to be a student during O-week!
In addition to free stuff, get ready for all the discounts you can think of. Being a student is hard enough without having to pay full price for things, so take advantage of it while you can, especially the discounted public transport. Because trust me, you’ll notice it when it’s gone!
The People You Meet
During your time at university you’re going to meet some pretty interesting people from all walks of life. The person you sit next to in your class might become your life long best friend. Your lecturer could become your most valuable mentor and could help you with a job reference in the future. Or odds are you’ll go to class everyday with these people and never see them again after you graduate. Point is, some people will change your life and others will just pass through…but it’s all a part of the uni experience!
You are in control of your own time table (well, most of it anyway). So there comes a certain sense of responsibility and independence that can be quite liberating. You are in control of your own learning and you will decide whether you sink or swim. whether you join a committee, are the captain of a sports club or immerse yourself in a different culture by studying abroad, the way you shape your uni experience is up to you. You have complete freedom of choice!
The Bottom Line
Being a student is hard work, you’ll need a lot of dedication and sometimes pure willpower! But the amount of life lessons and knowledge you will gain from studying, even if it’s for a short while, is invaluable. So make the most of your uni experience, because I can guarantee you will miss most aspects of it when it’s all done and dusted.
